Peterson Portable Sawmills have recently attained CE certification, the internationally recognized standard for safety compliance, enabling the company to export its sawmills to Europe.
In order to attain CE certification, which is accepted into countries worldwide, including Australia, Canada, the United States and New Zealand, companies must comply with all relevant legislation as compiled by the European Commission.
As part of this compliance process, technical assessments are made by qualified engineers on the construction and mechanics of the mill, operation and risk assessments.
Meeting the stringent safety codes required in Europe was the next step to Peterson, who already had a strong commitment to safety and manufacturing a machine that would meet safety standards everywhere in the world.
“We have always strived to produce a highly safe and high-quality product.
“We saw working towards the attainment of CE certification as an integral part of our quality and control process. In achieving CE certification, it is satisfying for us to know that we have not had to change the design or the way our mills work, we have only had to make a few additions to our mills in order to attain CE certification,” says Carl Peterson, managing director of Peterson Sawmills.
The additions include a handle which makes it easier to push or pull the blade through the log, an emergency stop button, with emphasis on accessibility and high visibility in an emergency which will stop the blade in 6 seconds, and three extra safety guards have been placed around the moving parts of the mill, including one for double cutting.
Peterson has also upgraded the horizontal sizing wheel with one which is more robust. By simply turning the wheel, the centre unit moves swiftly and easily across the bed to set up for the next horizontal cut.
All mills now leaving the Peterson factory in New Zealand will be CE certified. Most existing sawmills can also be upgraded to attain CE certification.
